Flight planning and forecast for 11 April

last modified 2008-06-05 02:43
Status NOAA P-3

Window repairs are progressing well with the NOAA P-3. Plans are now for a flight N and NE for Friday, 11 Apr. Targets will be aged Arctic air and broken sea ice, as well as low mixed clouds.

Forecast for 11 April

Biomass burning plume likely overhead at 3-4km altitude, maybe slightly higher, E of Barrow sea.

Aged EU and NA CO out at lower levels in the Arctic, otherwise very aged, tracer-free air in the area.

Chances for convective clouds at leaks in the sea-ice cover.

Main question for further forecast planning is location of the cloud decks.

Further conditions

several models, including GFS and ECMWF, show a severe low-pressure system developing in the central N Pacific, which undergoes rapid deepening. Cyclone track shifting around at the moment, but probably intense advection of mid-latitude air will occur, and has the potential to remove Arctic haze conditions until the end of the campaign. Monday likely to be a down-day, except a flight out before the system moves in is possible.
